La Marie Vison 毛皮のマリー is a Japanese play that tells the fascinating tale of Marie, a transgender prostitute who lives in elegant squalor with her adult son and her loyal servant.
This play focuses on a number of gender bending characters, who are all part of a bizarre and surreal world. The main character Marie tries to conceal her masculine origin and appear as ladylike as possible, however something quite masculine about her still remains.
In October 2017 Smock Alley Theatre put on the first Irish production of this play, 50 years after it was written in 1967 by the by Japanese writer Shuji Terayama. The play also ran as part of a series of events celebrating the 60th anniversary of Japan-Ireland diplomatic ties.
